Advising 101 - Services We Offer

Why advising?

All new students are required to meet with an academic advisor before registering for courses. Continuing students will sometimes be blocked until meeting with their advisor (see “Continuing Student” section for additional information).

When students come in for advising, we encourage them to bring in a sample schedule using the Course Search & Schedule Planner. It speeds up the administrative process and allows students more time to ask questions and learn about new opportunities. Advisors will be able to show students what they have remaining in their degree plan and may make suggestions; however, it is ultimately the student’s responsibility to select and register for courses. Moreover, students also have the option of e-mailing their schedule to their advisor instead of scheduling and appointment or coming in for walk-ins (CAMadvising@cudenver.edu).

Please ensure that your e-mail address is updated through the SMART system at the beginning of every semester, and check your SPAM filters to make sure that you can receive e-mail from any account in the cudenver.edu domain (which will be changing soon to the ucdenver domain). Students can check their registration status (“reg status”) on the SMART system as well. This will tell you of any blocks you have on your registration once you receive the e-mail with your registration date and time (other offices – such as admissions, financial aid and bursar may block registration for other issues).

Continuing students

Continuing students (i.e., this is not your first semester) are not required to meet with their advisor every semester; however, you may choose to do so. We encourage students to use the “Course Search & Schedule Planner” to devise a schedule for the next semester and attend walk-ins.

When a registration block is placed for advising, students will be notified via e-mail. Advising blocks will be put on all students for the following semester:

  • Students with less than 30 semester credit hours or who are undeclared CAM students will be blocked every semester by the Academic Advising Center before they can register (call 303-352-3520 to schedule an appointment).
  • Students transitioning from the Academic Advising Center to the CAM Advising Offices will be blocked (at 30 credits or when major is declared).
  • At 75 credits, students have a mentoring block where they meet with their faculty mentor to discuss professional, artistic, and educational progress.
  • At 90 credits, students have a graduation check and will meet with their advisor to talk about the remaining semesters.

How to get advised

Appointment times are in high demand. If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, we request that you give us at least 24-hours notice so that we may accommodate another student. Students who miss their assigned time may not be able to reschedule their appointment and, therefore, may need to attend walk-in hours.

Students should request appointment times for questions that will take longer than 15 minutes.

  • Prospective Students
  • Study Abroad
  • Transfer Evaluations
  • Graduation Checks

Walk-ins are available and a good time to ask quick questions about courses. Continuing students (this is not your first semester) may also use this time to update their degree plan. They are limited to 15 minutes and are first come, first served.

  • Signatures
  • Schedule Checks
  • “How to” questions
  • Scholarship information

Please call (303) 556-2279 to schedule an appointment or inquire about our current walk-in schedule.
