Goals and Objectives

The goals and objectives of this project are:

to encourage good practice in the teaching and assessment
   of popular music performance

to identify different approaches to popular music

   performance assessment in higher education

to identify similarities and differences in approach to music
   assessment between the Western European Classical
   tradition and popular/commercial music

to identify common themes in the teaching, learning and
   assessment of the creative arts, examining graduates and
   employment histories, parity in standards and definitions of
   what is meant by the terms creativity and creative
   processes in education

to provide a flexible approach to faculty development that
   recognizes the differing needs of individuals, course faculty
   and degree programs in MEIS

Outcomes

The outcomes of this project will include:

results of questionnaires providing the perception of faculty

   development needs with regard to music assessment in the

   performance area

mini-workshops to identify issues in assessment and to
   further develop the prototype assessment package

participation in dissemination at conferences

weekly reports on the progress and evaluation of the
   project to

   date

an evaluative final report

faculty and program development web-based template

Measures

Performance-based measures that use student activities to assess knowledge and skills competencies as set forth by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) will be employed, and adjudicated by the performance faculty, including:

performances
musical creations
collaboration
writing
self-reflection skills

Campus-wide assessment methods that will be used include:

course-based exams
internship evaluations
student interviews
knowledge surveys
performances
electronic portfolios
self-reflections
surveys
videos and audio recordings of performances and
   presentations
written papers and reports, among others. 

MEIS Performance Area program-specific assessment methods will include:

auditions
juries
sophomore proficiencies
general recital performances
ensemble performances
studio and lab performances
junior and senior recital performances
internships
senior projects

This MEIS performance area-based project will support student learning by focusing on core assessment criteria. Core criteria represent key skills and include:

developing arguments
structuring answers
using evidence
critical evaluation
addressing the question
demonstrating understanding

A students’ guide to assessment is planned to help students understand and demonstrate these core criteria. Evidence-based benchmarking will be used to improve the reliability and validity of marking, and support more helpful, timely feedback to students. Teaching related to core criteria will enhance students’ understanding of assessment and promote key skills, with benefits outside and beyond higher education.
