the course American Studies 471, "American Popular Culture" taught at Washington
State University by T.V. Reed, and is
now also part of the Web projects of the American Studies program at WSU.
The site focuses on the critical analysis of American popular culture,
particularly on issues of race, class, gender, and sexuality as shaped
by and reflected in various mass media. As with all Internet sites, the
locations referenced below vary in quality and usefulness. Some are commercial
sites valuable more as objects of knowledge than as producers of knowledge.

Culture
in the Jazz Age (Nick Evans, University
of Texas-Austin): "This site documents
class work for an E309K (Topics in Writing) class offered through the Division
of Rhetoric and Composition at the University of Texas at Austin.
Students in the course learned methods for rhetorical and stylistic analysis
that are applicable both to "published" texts and their own writing.
The course focused primarily on texts (expository nonfiction, prose fiction,
poetry, and film) concerned with the topic of popular culture, especially
popular music. During the first half of the Spring 1996 semester we examined
and wrote about texts from the 1920s that address jazz. In the second half
of the semester, students built upon what they learned in the first half
and designed projects on topics of their own choosing." Categories

Rock,
Pop, and Rap (Thomas Swiss, Drake University):
"This introductory course assumes that popular music provides not only
entertainment, but a common space for the personal, social, and political
experiences of youth. Focusing on rock, pop, and rap (with a nod
to country), we'll consider the cultural roles of music and musicians;
the means by which music gets to its audiences; and the ways in which music
is interpreted and used by listeners in a variety of contexts. As
a feature of the course, we'll look at particular musical subcultures --
punk, for example, or techno, goth, lounge, and so on -- in order
to understand how certain social interests and tastes are served by particular
performers, songs, and performances. Most discussions will be shaped
by our responses to two kinds of writing: academic essays and cultural
journalism. But our study of popular music and youth culture may
also involve such experiences as listening to music, interpreting musical
resources on the Internet, and viewing scenes from videos that represent
the experiences of youth in a musical context." Units include:
Music as a Social Practice, Histories, Bring the Noise: Performances and
