Dean’s Council

Mission

The UCD College of Arts and Media Dean's Council exists to:

1 ) advise the Dean and the College faculty on curriculum development, community outreach, business partnerships, and fundraising strategies; and 2) to serve as a network of informed advocates in the community for the advancement of the College.

Qualities and Competencies of Council Members

Members shall possess a strong desire to support the mission of the College and the willingness to share their wisdom, contacts, time, energy, and wealth to accomplish the goals of the Council and the College as a whole. Council members should have a demonstrated interest in one or more of the following areas: the arts, computer-based multimedia technology, telecommunications, or the entertainment industry. Council members should be perceived as leaders and/or people of influence in the Denver metropolitan region.

Council Size and Length of Terms

The Dean's Council shall be composed of up to 15 members, each of whom serve for two-year terms, appointed by the Dean of the College of Arts and Media based on recommendations from the Executive Committee. Membership on the Council may be renewed one time for a maximum four-year term of service. After the maximum four-year term individual may return to the Dean's Council after an absence of two years.

The Founding Members of the Dean's Council will consist of seven individuals appointed for three-year terms and eight individuals appointed for two-year terms. All fifteen Founding Members will be eligible for a two-year renewal of their appointment, if desired.

Responsibilities of Council Members

Dean's Council members agree to assume the following responsibilities:

  1. Attend a maximum of three half-day meetings per year (October, January and May). Meetings will generally be held on a weekday afternoon and will be followed by an optional social event;
  2. Make a tax-deductible financial contribution to the College through the CU Foundation, at a level deemed appropriate by each member;
  3. Develop a circle of friends and financial supporters of the College;
  4. Be accessible to the Dean between meetings for advice and consultation;
  5. Serve on one Council Committee that will meet at least three times per year outside of Council meetings;
  6. Recruit individuals outside of the Council for Committee work or projects on an as-needed basis;and Represent and serve as an informed advocate for the College in the community.

Officers and Ex-Officio Members

The Officers of the Dean's Council shall consist of the following:

  • A Chair, appointed for a one-year term after serving one year as Vice Chair. The Chair shall preside at all meetings of the Dean's Council, shall develop agendas, and represent the Council within the University and in the community.
  • A Vice-Chair, appointed for a one-year term, who becomes Chair in his/her second year. The Vice Chair shall support the Chair in the leadership of the Council.
  • A Corresponding Secretary, appointed for a one-year term. The Corresponding Secretary shall work with the College staff to assemble and distribute minutes, meeting announcements and agendas, and shall draft correspondence on behalf of the Council for internal and external constituents.
  • A Financial Secretary, appointed for a one-year term. The Financial Secretary shall work with the College staff to assemble and distribute quarterly reports on the Council's fundraising and earned income activities.
  • The Dean and the College's development officers shall serve as ex officio members of the Dean's Council.

Committees

The Dean's Council shall maintain four committees: the Executive Committee, the Fundraising Committee, the Partnership Committee, and the Advocacy Committee. Each committee shall consist of Dean's Council members as well as Council-recruited volunteers from the community at large, cultural institutions, and industry. Committees shall meet as part of each Council meeting, and shall meet at least three times each year between Council meetings. The Executive Committee of the Dean's Council shall consist of the Officers, the Dean, and the College's Director of Development. The Executive Committee shall recommend Council appointments, committee composition, establish meeting times and agendas, and shall facilitate the work of the Council between meetings of the full Council. The Fundraising Committee shall develop and implement fundraising activities for the benefit of the College, in cooperation with the College's development officers. The Partnership Committee shall work to identify potential community and business partners for the College to pursue for learning and research opportunities for students and faculty, as well as potential College-based partnerships that would serve businesses and members of the community. The Advocacy Committee shall work to develop and implement strategies to raise awareness of the College and its mission among leaders in the community, government, cultural institutions and industry. The committee shall also work to identify and recruit friends and participants in the College's activities, events, programs, and advocacy efforts.
