Islamic Origins of American Blues

This is the first event of the “Islam in American Culture” series, sponsored by the at UC Denver. The event will feature Dr. Sylviane Diouf, a historian at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, and musicians from the College of Arts and Media. Dr. Diouf will present a lecture on the importation of Islamic musical forms into the U.S. by Muslim slaves born in West Africa. She will focus specifically on the way in which melodies, note changes, and themes from Islamic musical traditions surface in the American blues. Dr. Diouf’s lecture will be combined with a live performance of the music that she refers to in her talk, featuring Sean McGowan and Judith Coe performing the blues.
