McGowan & Musso Guitar Duo

Assistant professors Sean McGowan and Paul Musso will explore the textures and colors of combining arch-top and nylon string guitars.  This guitar duo performance will include jazz, Latin and original compositions.  Both professors will also discuss the thought process involved in creating music, collaborating and improvising.

Paul Musso-
College of Arts & Media Assistant Professor

Paul Musso is has been with UC Denver for fifteen years teaching fretboard theory, commercial guitar styles, applied guitar studies, jazz theory, songwriting, improvisation and mentoring a host of guitar ensembles. Musso is a freelance guitarist and has performed throughout Colorado area with many diverse ensembles including the Colorado Symphony, the Boulder Festival Orchestra, the Aspen Music Festival, and the Westcliff Jazz Festival. He is the author of two Mel Bay books for jazz guitar - Fingerstyle Jazz Guitar/Teaching Your Guitar to Walk and Graded Fingerstyle Jazz Guitar Solos. Paul is a co-author of Mel Bay’s 2000 Jazz Guitar, where Paul shares the bill with greats Johnny Smith, John Abercrombie, Buckey Pizzarelli, George Van Eps, Andy Summers, and many others. His most recent publication, Developing Jazz Guitar Solos, will be released in 2009.

Sean McGowan-
College of Arts & Media Assistant Professor.

Sean McGowan is a guitarist from Maine who combines many diverse influences with unconventional techniques to create a broad palette of textures within his compositions and arrangements for solo guitar. His first recording, River Coffee won the Best Independent Release of the Year Award (2002) from Acoustic Guitar magazine. Music from the CD has been featured on BBC’s Great Guitars radio program, and has been published in Japan’s Acoustic Guitar magazine and Mel Bay’s Master Anthology of Fingerstyle Guitar, Vol. 3.
