Faculty
Donna Bogard, Emeritus faculty, Music
Dr.
Donna Bogard has devoted her entire life to music -- its study, its enjoyment,
its empowerment and enrichment -- and above all, its teaching. As an Assistant
Professor, she retires from the active faculty of the University of Colorado Denver in the year 2000, leaving behind a legacy of 30 years of service
to CU. She has a professional and personal life of dedication to the teaching
and radiation of music that spans more than half a century, enriching the
education and lives of thousands of music students, audiences, churchgoers
and others throughout the state of Colorado and internationally.
In 1999, Dr. Bogard received the 25 Year Service Award for Outstanding Teaching from the Colorado Music Educators Association; in 1994, she was the recipient of the School of Arts Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence; in 1992, Dr. Bogard was the recipient of the University of Colorado Alumni Recognition Award. In 1996 she was the Guest of Honor at a reception sponsored by the Mayor of Auvilar, with Les Danseurs du Brulhois, in France.
Dr. Bogard holds membership in numerous professional music and academic associations, including: Colorado State Music Teachers Association, American Choral Directors Association, American Guild of Organists, Colorado Choral Directors Association, International Federation of Choral Directors, Colorado Music Educators Association, National Association of Teachers of Singing, National Guild of Piano Teachers, Suburban North West Music Teachers Association, American Association of University Women, and the International Society for Music Education.
In
1987, Dr. Bogard founded the CU Alumni Choir, a monumental effort to bring
together alumni from all campuses of the University of Colorado in a volunteer
public performance group of music and song. She has directed the Choir
since its founding. The choir is based at CU Denver. Performing on numerous
occasions each year, Dr. Bogard has provided the CU Alumni Choir with a
rich and diverse musical heritage. Energizing and diverse performances
have included the music of Cole Porter, George Gershwin, music of South
Africa, early American music from Shaker, Moravian and African-American
traditions, music in the White House, Dixieland Jazz, Songs of the Civil
War, and World Wars I and II. And, of course, the numerous concerts of
Christmas holiday music.
A
scholarship for vocal students has been established in Dr. Donna's name.
The Donna J. Bogard Scholarship in Vocal Music honors Donna's forty years
of teaching, performing and scholarship. The endowment fund will provide
annual support to an outstanding vocal music student at UC Denver. The
fund was conceived by Catherine and John Nix, vocal instructors at UC Denver.
The kickoff event for the establishment of the fund was held on November 23, 1999. The Scholarship fund collected over $18,000 at this event, well on its way to collecting $25,000. The event featured performances by Theresa Bogard, pianist and Steven Bogard, vocalist. Dr. Theresa Bogard is associate professor at the University of Wyoming and Steven Bogard was on loan from the national touring production of Jekyll and Hyde. The event was a sellout!
